CRE Resources For Teachers

The annotated bibliography link on this page lists books, curricula, periodicals, audio/visual materials, games/simulations and resources that teachers may choose to use in classroom and/or in community settings. These examples of resources focus on issues of bullying/bullying prevention, diversity/multi-cultural education, classroom management/positive discipline, conflict resolution education, poverty, trauma diffusion and violence prevention. The list is by no means exhaustive, but provides a sample of resources from which to begin. The bibliography is from Cuyahoga Community College, Office of Community Continuing Education, Global Issues Resource Center, located in Highland Hills, Ohio.

These resources can be used to complete curricula integration and classroom management education plans for the classroom. Educators should adapt the exercises and the number of lessons taught based on their students’ needs. It is recommended that educators teach a minimum of one lesson per week and not skip weeks.

An additional resource that includes examples of classroom activities is the complete set of Participant Guides from the 4 Day Conflict Resolution in Teacher Education Training sessions. There are also many examples of conflict resolution exercises for use in the classroom in the CRETE Teacher's Calendar.

Frequently schools may need to select an “evidence based” curriculum or program when implementing their conflict resolution programs and accessing federal or state funds. Three sites which provide reviews of various programs and curriculum in conflict resolution and related topics are available from:

The Collaborative for Academic Social and Emotional Learning
Safe and Sound: An Educational Leader’s Guide to Evidence
Based Social and Emotional Learning Programs:

SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices
National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP), a service of the United States Department of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). To access the register please follow this link - http://www.nrepp.samhsa.gov/

NREPP is a searchable database of interventions for the prevention and treatment of mental and substance use disorders. SAMHSA has developed this resource to help people, agencies, and organizations implement programs and practices in their communities. A significant portion of the programs are available in Spanish.

Blue Prints for Violence Prevention, a project of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at the University of Colorado
The Blueprints mission is to identify truly outstanding violence and drug prevention programs that meet a high scientific standard of effectiveness. In doing so, Blueprints serves as a resource for governments, foundations, businesses, and other organizations trying to make informed judgments about their investments in violence and drug prevention programs. To date, it has assessed more than 800 programs. Blueprints’ standards for certifying model and promising violence prevention programs are widely recognized as the most rigorous in use. Program effectiveness is based upon an initial review by Blueprints staff and a final review and recommendation from a distinguished Advisory Board, comprised of experts in the field of violence prevention. For an overview of the model and promising programs, please log onto http://www.colorado.edu/cspv/blueprints/index.html
